Pencil design

A Vector Tribute to the Classic Ticonderoga

Overview

This project focused on designing a personalized pencil using Adobe Illustrator, blending technical precision with creative expression. Starting with the foundational shape of a traditional pencil, the challenge was to explore vector tools and digital illustration techniques to transform a simple object into a unique, stylized design.

The objective was not only to replicate the form accurately, but also to reimagine the pencil through custom colors, textures, and creative enhancements that reflect personal style or conceptual themes. By experimenting with gradients, strokes, and layering, this project emphasized the power of Illustrator in turning everyday items into distinctive digital artwork.

Final design process

This project was both creatively engaging while not too technically elaborate, making it one of the more memorable experiences I’ve had working on a project. Following the guided steps, I began by constructing the core elements of the pencil and then infused the design with my own artistic flair.

Drawing inspiration from the classic Ticonderoga pencil, I utilized a range of Adobe Illustrator tools—including the Type Tool, Gradient Tool, Pen Tool, and more—to achieve a highly realistic final result. Among all the tools, the Pen Tool quickly became my favorite; it allowed me to create custom shapes that gave the pencil a worn, authentic look, especially around the metal ferrule and eraser. I also enjoyed working with the Gradient Tool, which added dimensionality to the eraser and the wooden tip, enhancing the overall realism of the illustration.

Overall, this project allowed me to blend technical precision with creativity, and it stands out as one of the most rewarding and enjoyable pieces I’ve completed.
