What is my favorite music to listen to while designing?

“Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty…

because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something.”- Steve Jobs

Music is something that can stir up so many different emotions and feelings. All genres of music can find a home in someone's life, and it can help people also. Depending on the type of music you listen to it can help you be more productive to being in a lazy mood, or it can even get you energized to even just lounging around. I listen to all different genres of music, and I can find enjoyment in most of them, but my favorites when doing work would have to be either country or hip-hop or rap. I find that music can center my focus on a task and complete it. This is not always the case when I listen to music, but I can appreciate the various parts of songs and how they pair together.

When I listen to country music there are diverse types of songs, and the mood from one song can vary wildly from the next. This is helpful for me when I am working on assignments and designs because it opens a part of my brain that floods with creativity and unique designs for potential projects. As explained, “And if you’re in the design game, tuning into this rhythm can totally transform your work. It's like adding a secret ingredient to your creative recipe.” (Josh, Carroll) I like this analogy a lot because it is true when it comes to designers, regarding their design style and how every designer has a signature style that they are known for, and people can have similar styles, but they will never be exact copies.

Listening to hip-hop and rap music while designing also has its benefits like country music. The mood can vary depending on the artist you listen to too because, as stated previously, artists have their own style when it comes to making music. With hip-hop and rap, songs can be fast and get you energized and pumped up while others can be slow and just be a chill song to vibe with. Many people could argue that this genre is not the best to listen to when completing work and would prefer calm and relaxing music

People have this perception that work should be done in a quiet and calm place with no disturbance.
— Nihar, Joglekar

I beg to argue that this type of music does help when completing work because the different sounds of the song can spark ideas and open new doors of creativity. The fast pace of most hip-hop and rap songs helps me when designing and working because it gives me a burst of creativity, energy, and a craving to design. The fast pace of the song along with the lyrics can really get me to be toe-tapping along to the beat when designing and people would argue that instrumental music is better for working because it does not include the lyrics, and they could distract you. I do not really understand this argument because I find instrumental music to be a little bland when it comes to doing work and could end up in a decrease of productivity.

All designers have their own little habits that help them to get work done and music is a great tool to help. I listen to music almost 10-12 hours a day and it can switch between many genres. The 3 main components of a song that determine if it will be good for me to listen to while working are the mood, flow, and pace.
