Where Imagination Moves: Transforming Ideas into Motion with After Effects
Overview
Adobe After Effects, on the other hand, is a powerful software application used for creating motion graphics and visual effects. It allows for specific animation and design and can be used seamlessly with other Adobe programs such as Photoshop and Illustrator. Other than motion graphics and animation, After Effects is commonly used in post-production for films, offering numerous possibilities for visual graphics and designs.
Our task was to produce a 30-second video that demonstrated our understanding of motion graphics. The final product had to showcase our ability to animate a single visual medium using the tools and principles taught in class.
Design process
Sketches & Ideas
For my After Effects piece, I wanted to merge my knowledge in typography and motion design. I chose the classic typeface Baskerville and built a short educational video that highlighted its history and some distinctive type anatomy. I began with hand-drawn sketches to storyboard the sequence and then imported them in Photoshop. Each sketch was placed in its own file for easy organization when moved to After Effects.
After Effects final
After my initial sketches were complete, I scanned them into Adobe Photoshop and organized each slide into its own file. This made it easier to manage and organize the slides when importing them into After Effects. After the files were imported, I began designing the layout and animating the text. I added motion by having the text enter dynamically and then move, reshape, and resize across the slides to emphasize key elements of type anatomy. To tie everything together, I selected a background color inspired by the era in which Baskerville was originally created, aiming to reflect the typeface’s historical roots while maintaining a cohesive and visually appealing aesthetic.
